It’s known that Filipinos have been in Arizona since the time Cesar Chavez was fighting for farmer’s rights and there were a few Filipinos who helped him along. Some of them were a little bitter since he never mentioned about any Filipino involvement. In the mid 60′s, Filipino professionals such as nurses and doctors came to Arizona for work from the Philippines. Today, there are over 35,000 Filipinos scattered throughout the state with the Phoenix Metro Area having most of the Filipino population. You will seldom see them as the Filipinos are spreadout throughout the valley and not have a concentration in one area like California, New Jersey, Chicago, or New York.
There are several local restaurants and only one Filipino store since there are a lot of Asian stores who carry Filipino products. These Asian stores are also spreadout throughout the valley. You can also find them in local churches and there a few churches who have high Filipino attendance and one of them is the Lady of the Valley Church on 33rd Ave and Greenway. There is a Filipino Community Center which is owned by one of the oldest organizations – The Filipino Club of Arizona, and is located on 22nd Ave and Bethany Home Road. It is not actively used but it is available for funcitons. Here’s a list of the Filipino Community Organizations in Arizona:
Arizona Filipino American Community – Filipinos and Filipino American Organizations in Phoenix, Gilbert, Mesa, Goodyear, Tucson, Sierra Vista, Casa Grande, Arizona
Southeast Valley Filipino American Families & Friends - SEVFAF of AZ
